Scholarships: Every year the Asphalt Pavement Association of Oregon Education Foundation (APAOEF) awards four to six scholarships in amounts ranging from $2,000 to $3,500. Students who are awarded a scholarship receive a check for the award amount and may use the money to help offset student expenses however they see fit. The only requirement is that students are expected to attend the Asphalt Pavement Association of Oregon’s annual meeting in December, which is where the scholarships will be presented. Of course, the added benefits of attending the annual meeting include a free meal and an opportunity to network with industry professionals.
Eligibility: Not all students realize that our nation’s economy relies heavily (figuratively and literally) on asphalt pavement. However, everything in our homes was at some point transported over the roads, and a majority of our national infrastructure is asphalt pavement road and highway – all of which are built and maintained by scientifically analyzing materials with significant inherent variability. Students interested in our road and highway infrastructure and the materials and methods used to design our roads and highways are perfect candidates for an APAOEF scholarship. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in asphalt paving technology or a closely related field and be currently enrolled in an accredited engineering, construction engineering management, or construction trade program at a college, university, or professional trade school in Oregon. Students pursuing advanced degrees are eligible.
Additional Factors: Academic performance, extracurricular activities, work experience, and financial need may be considered. Although letters of recommendation are not required, they will be considered if submitted.
Deadline, Award Date and Location: The application deadline is Monday, November 2, 2020. Scholarships will be awarded to selected students before the end of 2020, and APAO will contact selected students with details. Scholarships are typically awarded to students at APAO’s Annual Meeting in December, but the COVID-19 challenges necessitate changing the process so additional details will be forthcoming.
